Colour - The colour

The color of a diamond describes the natural presence or absence of color visible in the stone. If a diamond appears cloudy or slightly yellowish, it is said to have more color. Generally speaking, the clearer (colorless) the stone, the higher its value.

Traces of color in diamonds usually indicate that different trace elements were present during the formation process.

Diamonds with stronger color often show a pale yellow or brown tinge, which reduces their color quality and therefore their value.

However, subtle shades don't necessarily detract from a diamond's beauty—they can even make it unique. However, the more color a diamond has, the less light can pass through it, making the stone appear darker or duller.

A clear and colorless diamond allows light to enter and pass through unhindered, resulting in greater brilliance and more intense fire.

Color differences between lab-grown and mined diamonds

When it comes to color, lab-grown diamonds are in a league of their own. Under the controlled conditions of a laboratory, the mineral impurities that give diamond color are almost nonexistent.

Each diamond is professionally evaluated and graded according to the GIA color scale, which ranges from D (absolute colorless) to Z (visible color) . While mine diamonds can perform differently on this scale, lab-grown diamonds are typically always graded J (near colorless) or better.

Color grades of diamonds

D
Absolutely colorless or ice-white: The highest color grade — extremely rare and particularly valuable.

E
Colorless: Only minimal color residues that can only be detected by an experienced gemologist — rare and high-quality.

F
Colorless: Slightest traces of color that can only be detected by experts — still falls into the colorless category and is of high quality.

G
Almost colorless: Color becomes noticeable compared to better grades, but offers excellent value for money.

H
Almost colorless: Color is noticeable in direct comparison, but remains a good choice with an attractive price-performance ratio.

I
Almost colorless: Slight traces of color visible — a good compromise between quality and price.

J
Nearly colorless: Slight traces of color visible — a good value and often found in lab-grown diamonds.

At Stellini Diamonds, we place great emphasis on the highest quality — our lab-grown diamonds impress not only with their virtually colorless appearance, but also with their brilliance and excellent value for money.
