Clarity - The Purity

The clarity of a diamond describes how clear and pure the stone is. It is assessed based on the number and type of internal and external inclusions (impurities).

During the formation of a diamond, it is completely normal for microscopic impurities to become trapped inside or on the surface.

These inclusions are typically only visible under 10x magnification , but they play a crucial role in determining a diamond's clarity and value. The fewer inclusions, the higher the stone's value—and usually, the more expensive it is.

It is therefore important to check a diamond's certificate before purchasing it, as the reasons for a certain price are often not apparent to the naked eye.

At the same time, these tiny inclusions give each diamond its own unique character — and for many people, this is precisely what makes a diamond so special.

There are eleven purity levels , ranging from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3) .
At Stellini Diamonds, we only carry gemstones with a clarity of Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1-VVS2) or better — this means each of our stones possesses exceptional brilliance and breathtaking sparkle.

Diamond purity grades

FL — Flawless:
Diamonds without internal or external inclusions — extremely rare and particularly valuable.

IF — Internally Flawless:
No internal inclusions, only minimal external features possible — extremely high quality.

VVS1 — Very Very Slightly Included 1 (Very, very small inclusions 1):
Inclusions are extremely difficult to detect even under 10x magnification.

VVS2 — Very Very Slightly Included 2 (Very, very small inclusions 2):
Minimal inclusions that are very difficult to detect under 10x magnification.

VS1 — Very Slightly Included 1 (Very small inclusions 1):
Inclusions are difficult to detect under 10x magnification and barely visible to the naked eye.

VS2 — Very Slightly Included 2 (Very small inclusions 2):
Slightly more inclusions than VS1, but still difficult to detect and mostly invisible to the naked eye.

SI1 — Slightly Included 1 (Small Inclusions 1):
Inclusions are visible under 10x magnification, but are often inconspicuous to the naked eye.

SI2 — Slightly Included 2 (Small Inclusions 2):
More inclusions than SI1, clearly visible under 10x magnification, partially visible to the naked eye.
