4C - Carat

Carat - Carat

Carat (ct) is the special unit of measurement that indicates the weight of diamonds and other gemstones.

Important to note: Carat weight does not automatically indicate the actual size of a gemstone. Different cuts and shapes distribute the weight differently within the stone—this can make some diamonds appear significantly larger than their carat weight suggests. For example, an oval diamond.

For this reason, the size of a gemstone is measured separately from its carat weight —namely, in length and width (millimeters). An emerald-cut diamond and a brilliant-cut diamond with the same carat weight therefore have different millimeter measurements and also appear to be different sizes.

In general, the larger the diamond, the rarer and more valuable it is . This is especially true for natural diamonds—to extract a single carat, approximately 250 tons of ore must be processed. This makes mining extremely complex and expensive.

With the development of lab-grown diamonds as an alternative to natural stones, it is now possible to produce a 1-carat diamond under controlled conditions — and at a fraction of the cost of a mined diamond.

Lab-grown diamonds are created in an environment that precisely replicates the natural conditions of the Earth's crust— heat and pressure . Physically and chemically, they are identical to natural diamonds—the only difference lies in their origin.

Lab-grown diamonds are also evaluated and certified according to the 4Cs . Their price is determined by cut, color, clarity, and carat .

Anyone who wants to understand the value of a diamond should know the 4Cs. Diamonds often vary greatly in appearance and quality—and without objective evaluation criteria, choosing quickly becomes difficult. However, the 4Cs are not rigid buying rules , nor do they define what makes a diamond beautiful.

In the end, what matters is that the beauty of a diamond is in the eye of the beholder — that’s exactly what makes each one so special.

At Stellini Diamonds, we help you find the exact diamond that perfectly reflects your personal idea of beauty and value.
